Meet Our Founder
Narau
Narau, a Maasai girl from Northern Tanzania, grew up in a traditional polygamous family, where she was the only daughter determined to pursue formal education despite the cultural norms that valued girls primarily for their future dowry. Raised among the Maasai, Narau spent her early years herding cattle and helping with domestic chores. After completing primary school at age 12, just as her marriage was arranged, she bravely escaped and found refuge with her teacher, who connected her with the Maasai Women Education Development Organization (MWEDO). With their support, Narau continued her education, eventually graduating from MWEKA with a degree in wildlife tourism, fulfilling her dream of becoming a conservationist.
Now a successful and educated wildlife conservationist, Narau has transformed her family’s status in the community, proving the value of female education. Her success has shifted perceptions within the Maasai community, where educated daughters are now highly regarded. As the Co-founder and Director of Enduata Community Initiative Organization (ECIO), Narau is committed to helping other girls overcome the same cultural barriers she faced. ECIO focuses on empowering the community through conservation and education, aiming to end harmful practices such as early marriage and female genital mutilation, and to support young girls in achieving their dreams.
